Notes: This contemporary house, built in 1959, was designed with living quarters on the second floor to take advantage of a dramatic 10 mile country vista. However, the small kitchen/dining room was located on the back of the house ignoring the "other" view. The design challenge was to increase this second-floor space and to exploit the beauty of the blue spruce trees and garden below. The solution was a prow-shaped, elevated addition with cathedral ceiling and abundant glass.

The new design needed to integrate with the existing architecture and include an outdoor cooking area, plus garden access. The interior space was to be warm and inviting, conducive to entertaining - with distinctive and fun details.

The solution incorporated a sense of mystery and surprise with the second floor design. Entering through a small kitchen door, the interior first draws you in, then the outdoors beacons you through the kitchen. The grill deck with bridge serves the herb garden and yard. The exterior design incorporated contemporary wood and steel components - consistent with the existing architecture.

The curved-back granite island with raised boomerang shelf invites everyone to converge and visit. Magnets from various travels (formerly on the refrigerator) magically stick to the wall. Other details include a combination of wood and ceramic floors; cherry cabinets with frosted glass doors and steel-figured hardware; and a teardrop-shaped lighting soffit suspended with cables to maintain openness.

The project achieved the clients' desired space and intimacy - by the colors and materials - by bringing the outside "in".
